Former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, says the party needs an experienced leader to guide its leadership transition as incumbent chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia prepares to leave the position.
He said the party must carefully consider the experience, temperament and institutional knowledge of whoever takes over, given the national chairman’s role in maintaining unity and managing competing interests within the party.
According to Mr Ofosu Ampofo, the next chairman must understand the NDC’s history and be capable of ensuring stability, continuity and a smooth transition.
Ofosu Ampofo highlights his experience
The former chairman said he had served the NDC in several capacities throughout his political career and remained willing to make his experience available to the party.
He recalled becoming a District Chief Executive at the age of 29 before serving two terms as a Member of Parliament. He also served as Deputy Regional Minister, Regional Minister and Minister responsible for Local Government.
Within the NDC, he served as National Organiser for 10 years, Director of Elections, Vice Chairman and National Chairman.
He said these roles had equipped him with experience in party organisation, governance and political administration that could be useful during the leadership transition.
Consultations before any decision
Mr Ofosu Ampofo disclosed that he was consulting key stakeholders within the party before announcing his future political plans.
He said he had refrained from granting interviews on the matter because he considered consultation and mutual respect important to the process.
He assured party members and Ghanaians that he would make his position known at the appropriate time after the consultations.
Calls for unity and respect for democracy
The former National Chairman urged party members to embrace unity and mutual respect, stressing that democracy should be the ultimate winner in every internal contest.
He commended those who had shown the courage to contest party positions and urged supporters to place the collective interest of the NDC above personal ambitions.
He also called on members to remain focused on the party’s broader objectives and support President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda.
Backs government’s development agenda
Mr Ofosu Ampofo expressed confidence in the government’s development agenda, particularly the 24-hour economy initiative, which he described as a gradual process requiring systematic implementation.
He urged party supporters to maintain confidence in the government and work together to ensure its policies deliver meaningful benefits to Ghanaians.
He concluded that the NDC would need unity, experienced leadership and a smooth transition to sustain its political strength and advance its development agenda.
