Mr. Abraham Koomson has cautioned the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to become complacent ahead of the 2028 general elections, warning that the party must work hard to prevent the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from returning to power.
According to him, the NDC must learn from its past mistakes, strengthen its internal structures and address legal and political challenges well ahead of the 2028 elections.
He said allowing the NPP to regain political power would, in his view, be dangerous for the country and therefore urged the NDC leadership to take the next general elections seriously.
Mr. Koomson stressed that the NDC must not create conditions that could allow the opposition party to capitalise on weaknesses within the government.
He called on the NDC to remain united, respect democratic principles and ensure that its policies and decisions continue to meet the expectations of Ghanaians.
«“The NDC should not make the mistake of allowing the NPP to resurface. It will be very dangerous to allow the NPP to come back to power,” he cautioned.»
Appointees Must Protect Government’s Image
Mr. Koomson also urged government appointees to exercise caution in the discharge of their responsibilities, warning them against actions that could damage the image of the Mahama administration.
He said appointees must understand that their individual conduct can have a direct impact on public perception of the government and, ultimately, the NDC’s chances in the 2028 elections.
According to him, government officials should avoid unnecessary controversies and actions that could make the government unpopular among Ghanaians.
He therefore appealed to appointees to be mindful of their public statements, decisions and conduct, stressing that they must work to protect the gains of the government rather than become a liability to it.
Mr. Koomson said the NDC government has a responsibility to deliver on its promises and maintain public confidence if it wants to secure another mandate.
He warned that complacency, internal disagreements and controversial conduct by government officials could provide the NPP with an opportunity to regain political relevance.
“The appointees must tread cautiously. They shouldn’t become a liability to the government’s gains. They shouldn’t do things that will make this government unpopular,” he said.
Mr. Koomson made the comments while speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme in Accra, where he discussed Ghana’s electoral system, the 2028 elections, the NPP’s August 6 demonstration and the state of the country’s democracy.
He reiterated that the NDC must begin preparing for 2028 now, stressing that the party’s ability to retain power would depend not only on its policies but also on the conduct and performance of its officials.
