*NDC Insight Raises Alarm Over Deteriorating Democracy in Ghana Under NPP Leadership
*Accra, Ghana
NDC Insight expresses grave concern regarding the alarming decline of Ghana’s democracy under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Recent events surrounding illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” have devastated our water bodies, forests, natural reserves, and farmlands, threatening the health and livelihoods of countless Ghanaians.
In a shocking display of disregard for civil rights, the NPP government has resorted to arresting citizens who dare to exercise their constitutional right to protest. This is a troubling precedent in a nation that has historically valued democratic freedoms. NDC Insight firmly believes that these arrests are a direct attempt to suppress dissent and silence the voices of those standing against the government’s complicity in the galamsey crisis.
Dr. Anthony Sorkpah, spokesperson for NDC Insight, stated, “Our democracy has suffered unprecedented attacks under Nana Addo and Dr. Bawumia. The recent arrests of peaceful demonstrators are a clear indication of their intent to stifle opposition. The government’s inaction on galamsey until after the upcoming elections reveals a shocking prioritization of political power over the welfare of our people and the environment.
“The ongoing galamsey activities have introduced harmful chemicals into our ecosystems, posing severe long-term risks to human health and the environment. The ramifications of this negligence will undoubtedly be felt in years to come if decisive action is not taken immediately.
NDC Insight calls on all Ghanaians to recognize the urgency of this situation. “We must see the detrimental impact of this government and vote them out of power on December 7th, 2024,” Dr. Sorkpah urged. “Ghana needs a reset. It is time for the youth of our nation to unite and champion the cause for change. We urge you to support His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and all our parliamentary candidates across the country to restore our democracy, uphold the rule of law, and protect our environment.
”As our elders remind us, “Arise, Ghana youth, for the country demands our devotion.” The time for action is now. Let us come together to safeguard our motherland and ensure a prosperous future for generations to come.Mr. President and Mr. Vice President, you have failed your citizens. Your response to our rightful protests has been to arrest those who dare to stand up for their constitutional rights. This is not leadership; it is an abdication of responsibility. It is time to put on your big boy pants and take decisive action to resolve the pressing issues facing our nation.
What has happened to your bold promise, “I will put my presidency on the line to fight galamsey”? Your administration’s inaction speaks volumes. Ghanaians have seen through your empty promises and sweet lies, and we are awake to the realities of your governance.
As December 7th approaches, remember this: power belongs to the people. It is the people who entrusted you with that power, and it is the people who will reclaim it. Your time of reckoning is near, and we will not be silenced.
NDC Insight stands firm in its resolve to mobilize citizens for change. Together, we will ensure that our voices are heard and that our democracy is restored. The future of Ghana depends on our collective action, and we must unite to hold this government accountable for its failures.
