NDC Grassroots Demand Jobs as Party Returns to Power — Nii Okai Warns Leadership Against Complacency

Former Tema West Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Andrew Nii Okai Okine, has reminded party leadership that the most urgent expectation of grassroots supporters is employment for the people.

Addressing party faithful during an end-of-year gathering for NDC grassroots members in the Sakumono Ward of the Tema West Constituency, Nii Okai stated bluntly that the call for jobs is not new. According to him, it is a long-standing demand that resurfaces every time the party assumes power. The event was held on January 10, 2026, at Lashibi and was organised by the Ward Coordinator, Mr. Seidu Ajaako.

Nii Okai criticised what he described as a recurring pattern in the party’s political messaging. He noted that while in opposition, the NDC often urges the youth to work hard and take their destiny into their own hands, promising that conditions will improve once the party returns to power. However, he argued that after winning elections, the narrative usually shifts to calls for patience and reassurances that “things will be fine” with time.

He stressed that the strength and survival of the NDC rest squarely on the grassroots, pointing out that both electoral defeats and victories originate from the base of the party. According to him, sustained political power is only possible if the party in government respects grassroots members, engages them meaningfully, and ensures they receive what is due them.

Nii Okai further warned that the era of silence is over, insisting that party members must now speak truth to power. He criticised what he described as self-congratulation within the party, arguing that such attitudes are dangerous now that the NDC is no longer in opposition.

“Leadership must wake up,” he stressed, adding that failure at the top will ultimately be felt at the base. He called on party leaders to be proactive and accountable, urging grassroots members to rise and demand that the right things are done to protect the future of the party.
