The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and other security agencies to ensure heightened security measures are in place for Ghana’s 2024 general elections.
This appeal was made during a press conference held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, where the party expressed concerns over potential threats to the safety and integrity of the electoral process.
Speaking at the event, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, stressed the party’s stance on accountability, emphasizing that security heads would be held responsible for any loss of life during the elections.
“The NDC, and by extension the people of Ghana, will hold the IGP, the Chief of Defence Staff, and other security heads accountable for any life lost during the 2024 general elections.
Elections are a democratic process about counting heads, not cutting heads. No person should lose their life in the name of elections,” Mr. Gyamfi declared.
The NDC also raised serious allegations, including claims of a plot by some members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to manipulate the election results by illicit means.
Mr. Gyamfi urged the Election Security Taskforce to conduct a thorough investigation into these allegations, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness to uphold the peace and stability of the nation.
According to the party, ensuring a peaceful electoral environment is not only the responsibility of political actors but also of the security apparatus.
The NDC reiterated its commitment to a peaceful electoral process while cautioning that any lapses in security could have dire consequences for Ghana’s democracy.
The call for enhanced security measures comes as the political atmosphere intensifies ahead of the 2024 polls, with both major political parties pledging to secure victory.
As tensions rise, the NDC’s demand underscores the critical role of security agencies in maintaining law and order throughout the electoral procedure.
