Stress is often a response to external pressures and challenges, representing how the brain reacts to our environment.
Many people experience stress in their daily lives, which can stem from various sources such as work, school, or personal relationships. Common signs of stress include excessive tiredness, loss of focus, difficulty sleeping, feelings of being overwhelmed, and anxiety.
Karen Akorfa Otoo, a psychologist, discussed stress management techniques during an appearance on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Alex Nana Dogbey. She emphasized that to manage stress effectively, individuals can try several techniques. Deep breathing exercises, regular physical activity, and good time management can all help reduce stress levels. Additionally, taking breaks and engaging in hobbies or activities you enjoy can provide relief. If stress becomes overwhelming, talking to a counselor or mental health professional can be beneficial.
Depression, on the other hand, is a more persistent feeling of sadness or hopelessness. The effects of chronic, long-term stress can be harmful and may contribute to depression, a mood disorder that leads to feelings of sadness and disinterest in activities that once brought joy.
Common symptoms of depression include changes in appetite or sleep patterns, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt. It can also manifest in physical symptoms, such as unexplained aches and pains.
Managing depression often requires support, which may include therapy, medication, or lifestyle changes. Engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy diet, and connecting with supportive friends or family can be beneficial. If you or someone you know is struggling with depression, it’s important to seek help from a mental health professional.
