National Security Orders Urgent Evacuation of 706 ECG Containers from Tema Port to Abelemkpe

The National Security Council Secretariat has initiated a high-level operation to evacuate 706 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) from the Tema Port to its warehouse in Abelemkpe, Accra.

A confidential directive, dated March 27, 2025, and signed by National Security Coordinator Osman Abdul-Razak, has been sent to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), instructing immediate action on the matter. The letter, which has been officially received and stamped by the GPHA, not only mandates the relocation of the containers but also demands the suspension of all port charges associated with them until an ongoing investigation is concluded.

Government Oversight and Possible Investigations

The involvement of top government agencies underscores the significance of this operation. Copies of the directive have been sent to the Minister of Transport and the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), signalling heightened governmental scrutiny over the situation.

Background: ECG’s Missing Containers and Procurement Irregularities

This latest development comes in the wake of growing concerns over missing or unaccounted-for ECG containers—an issue that has sparked national interest in recent months. Reports suggest that crucial electrical equipment meant for the country’s power distribution network has either disappeared or faced unexplained delays in clearance, raising questions about procurement and supply chain integrity.

Allegations of irregularities in procurement and clearance procedures have surfaced, with suggestions that financial mismanagement and administrative lapses may have led to significant losses. The directive from National Security adds a new layer of urgency, hinting at potential security concerns or deeper irregularities within the system.

As investigations continue, further updates are expected, with many keenly watching the government’s next steps in addressing this critical issue.
