National Museum Opens “Ghana 1957”: Art after Independence

The National Museum and Emolument has launched the “Ghana 1957: Art After Independence” exhibition to honor Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on his birthday, September 21. This pilot exhibition marks the beginning of a larger research initiative leading up to Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary in 2027.

The forthcoming exhibition aims to showcase a diverse array of artworks from Ghana, the U.S., and Europe, providing a comprehensive look at the independence era through art. It will highlight the evolution of modern art alongside traditional crafts, redefining the exhibition space as a tool for revisiting and reshaping history.

Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh, a KNUST lecturer and a curator, emphasized the importance of elevating Ghanaian art on the global stage and called for increased government investment to support artists. He noted that art can now be a viable livelihood.

Malik Sako, deputy director of the Ghana National Museum and monument Board, stressed the need for a state-of-the-art museum that aligns with international standards, arguing that this would enhance the display of Ghana’s rich heritage and culture.
