Private legal practitioner and historian, Yaw Anokye Frimpong, has stirred public debate after alleging that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, has been spiritually cursed for making comments perceived as disrespectful toward Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Frimpong argued that Dr. Nkrumah is not merely a political figure in Ghana’s history but a revered national icon whose legacy must be treated with honour, particularly by current and emerging political leaders.
According to him, remarks allegedly made by Napo during his outdooring as a running mate in Kumasi appeared to belittle the former President, a move he believes may have triggered spiritual consequences.
“Kwame Nkrumah is bigger than the NPP and bigger than any individual. The name Nkrumah is like a deity. You cannot disrespect someone older who paved the way for you,” he stated.
Mr. Frimpong further cited cultural and biblical principles to support his claims, noting that elders and foundational leaders deserve respect because they establish the path for future generations.
He also referenced past leaders such as former President John Agyekum Kufuor and President Nana Akufo-Addo, whom he said demonstrated respect for Nkrumah’s legacy through national initiatives including the renovation of the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and the Ghana @ 50 celebrations.
The historian questioned why Napo would target Nkrumah for criticism despite the former President’s contributions to Ghana’s development, including major institutions such as the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, KNUST, and several prominent schools in the Ashanti Region.
Mr. Frimpong warned that the alleged spiritual backlash could negatively affect the fortunes of any political ticket associated with Napo.
He therefore advised the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, against selecting him again as a running mate.
“If Bawumia brings him close again, it could affect him. He should rather choose someone like Bryan Acheampong or Adutwum,” he suggested.
