The National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) has licensed 14 companies to procure and supply food commodities directly from farming communities to its nationwide warehouses, CEO George Abradu-Otoo announced.
In an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV, Mr. Abradu-Otoo explained that the licensed firms use their on-the-ground agents to purchase produce such as rice from areas like Asutsuare then deliver it with proof of transaction for storage and distribution.
He emphasized the system’s oversight: “Once licensed, they buy, deliver to our warehouse, and provide documentation.” All deliveries face rigorous inspections by warehouse staff, including storekeepers and regional managers, to confirm quality and compliance before acceptance.
Pricing follows a structured process overseen by a Price Determination Committee, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Peasant Farmers Association, Rice Millers Association, and NAFCO.
The group uses nationwide market research to set proposals, which go to the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) for approval or adjustments.
“Once PPA gives final clearance, we announce the prices and move forward,” Mr. Abradu-Otoo said. He highlighted the framework’s emphasis on transparency, accountability, and legal compliance, noting NAFCO’s immediate priority is addressing the current market glut of excess produce.
