The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) proudly celebrates the historic announcement by UNESCO recognizing Highlife music and dance as part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.
This landmark designation acknowledges Highlife’s unique cultural significance and rich artistic legacy, not only for Ghana but also for the entire African continent.
MUSIGA extends heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Abdourahmane Diallo, former Head of the UNESCO office in Ghana, for his visionary leadership and unwavering support throughout the nomination process.
We also commend the dedication of the entire UNESCO staff who worked tirelessly to bring this achievement to fruition.
The Union further salutes Bernice Dei Kumah, former Head of the National Folklore Board, and her committed team, whose collaboration with the Ghana Culture Forum was instrumental in organizing the groundbreaking Highlife conference.
This seminal event laid the foundation for the application process that culminated two years ago in this extraordinary recognition.
A special mention goes to Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, for her unwavering commitment and passionate advocacy towards the listing of Highlife.
MUSIGA also acknowledges the visionary support of the previous leadership of the Ministry, whose contributions were vital in advancing the application and safeguarding Ghana’s cultural heritage. This accomplishment is a testament to the resilience, creativity, and cultural pride embodied by the Highlife community—musicians, promoters, and passionate music lovers alike.
MUSIGA calls on all stakeholders within this vibrant community to cherish our indigenous art form and to unite in celebrating this historic victory.
Let us continue to nurture and promote Highlife as a symbol of Ghanaian identity and a proud emblem of African heritage on the global stage.
Together, we elevate Highlife to new heights, honoring our past while inspiring future generations.
