Competition favorites Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko have progressed to the last sixteen stage of the MTN FA Cup after recording commanding victories in their respective Sunday games.
At the University of Ghana’s Sports Stadium, Hearts of Oak mounted a dominant show to put three past Ho based Home Stars all in the second half, thanks to goals from red hot striker Mawuli Wayo, Enoch Asubonteng and Asamoah Boateng—his first competitive goal since joining from Nations FC.
The Phobians have scored full marks thus far in the competition this season—scored five goals in two games (2-0 against Immigration FC and 3-0 against Home Stars), keeping clean sheets in all.
Elsewhere in Kumasi, nine-time champions Asante Kotoko recorded 2-0 win against ‘stubborn’ side Acceler8z FC, courtesy 31st minute spot kick from Kwame Poku and 96th minute belter from captain Henry Ansu. Kwame Poku increases his goal tally to three in all competitions since rejoining in last December.
The Division Two side were a delight to watch as they troubled Kotoko’s midfield for a large part of the game lacked the finishing power upfront.
Kotoko had beaten Future Stars 2-0 in their last outing in the competition and edges closer to winning the title for the 10th time.
Accra Lions who have had a horrible campaign were beaten on 5-4 penalties after a 0-0 full time score against FC Nania. There is a dim or no hope of winning any silverware this season for the Accra based club as they have consistently been fighting relegation in the premier league.
Nania FC’s victory over Accra Lions marks their second consecutive season of eliminating a Premier League side in the FA Cup.
Last season, they notably knocked out Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics, showcasing their ability to compete against top-tier teams.
At the Tuba Astro Turf, similar fate donned Dreams FC as they were defeated by Tema based Division One side True Democracy by a lone goal. The defeat means the former FA Cup champions will turn attention to the premier league to salvage their survival and that will begin next week when they face another weak side Legon Cities.
At Nsoatreman, defending champions were knocked out after losing 5-3 in a shootouts to Young Apostles in an all premier league affairs following a 0-0 full time score.
Nsoatreman FC have now gone ten games in all competitions without a single win.
Bechem United continued their impressive run since November 2024 after winning Premier League fellows Nations FC 1-0 at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, thanks to a first half strike by Emmanuel Abban.
The win marks 7th consecutive victory in all last 8 outings in all competitions.
