MTN Data Breach: Ministry of Communications Urges Calm as Investigations Begin

The Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations has called for calm following reports of a cyber breach that has potentially exposed the data of approximately 5,700 MTN customers.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the Ministry assured the public of its commitment to resolving the issue swiftly and transparently. It stated that it is working in collaboration with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), the National Communications Authority (NCA), and the Data Protection Commission (DPC) to investigate the breach and determine the extent of the incident.

Coordinated Response

“This collaboration aims to establish the scope of the breach and ensure that robust measures are implemented to safeguard customer data,” the statement read. “The Ministry will ensure that affected customers are contacted and supported in compliance with Ghana’s Data Protection Laws.”

The Ministry emphasized that it is also assessing whether any lapses occurred on the part of the Mobile Network Operator, MTN Ghana, to prevent similar incidents in the future.

MTN Responds to the Incident

MTN Ghana, in its own press release on April 28, 2025, acknowledged the cybersecurity incident, confirming its impact on a subset of its customers. However, the telecom giant assured the public that its platforms remain fully operational.

“We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and are closely monitoring the situation,” MTN stated. The company added that it has engaged cybersecurity experts to conduct a comprehensive forensic investigation into the breach.

MTN reiterated its commitment to maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of its systems, stressing that safeguarding customer information is a top priority.

Assurance to Customers

The Ministry has urged customers not to panic, assuring them that all necessary actions are being taken to protect their data and resolve the situation. It also reminded customers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to their accounts.

“This is a serious matter, but we want to assure the public that steps are being taken to address it effectively. The Ministry will provide regular updates as new information becomes available,” the statement concluded.

Next Steps

As investigations continue, the Ministry has pledged to work closely with MTN Ghana and relevant authorities to prevent future breaches and strengthen Ghana’s cybersecurity framework. Customers are encouraged to follow official updates and contact MTN or the Ministry if they have concerns about their data.

This incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of data protection in an increasingly digital world and the need for continued vigilance by both corporations and regulatory authorities.
