The Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MOMAG) has issued a strong warning to the government over the damaging effects of illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.
MOMAG representatives voiced their concerns during an appearance on Channel One TV’s ‘I Stand Against Galamsey’ campaign on Monday, September 16.
The campaign is dedicated to amplifying the voices of associations, organizations, and unions calling for an end to galamsey.
The group accused the government of failing to act decisively and threatened that if the situation does not improve by the end of September, MOMAG members nationwide will halt their operations in protest of the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.
Kingsley Amoako Atta, National Secretary of MOMAG, emphasized the potential impact of such a strike and urged the government to take immediate and effective measures to address the crisis.
“In light of the government’s inaction, MOMAG is left with no choice but to consider a nationwide strike and this strike will impact momo transactions, bill payments, salary payments, and financial inclusion will also be affected.”
MOMAG further urged the government to grant the following demands;
- Declare a state of emergency over all water bodies
- Cancel all mining leases that cross water bodies
- Enforce laws and regulations governing mining activities
- Provide alternative livelihood for illegal miners
