Mobile Money Agents Urge Government to Boost Security Amid Rising Robbery Attacks

The recent surge in robbery attacks and murders, with over 8 reported cases in the first quarter, has sent shockwaves through Ghana, particularly among mobile money agents. These agents, who provide essential financial services, are now living in fear due to the increasing rate of killings in the society.

Mr. Charles Akwasi Addo, National Public Relation Officer of the Mobile Money Agent Association of Ghana, is urging the government to prioritize security measures to safeguard businesses and citizens. This call to action is not only timely but also crucial, given the devastating impact of these attacks on mobile money agents and their families.

To address these safety concerns, operators could consider developing suitably-priced group insurance schemes, which would provide financial protection to agents in the event of an attack. Additionally, mobile money security and detection features should be formulated to prevent and detect potential threats.

The Joint Security Agencies have also reported an increase in targeted attacks on mobile money dealers and banking agents, highlighting the need for increased security measures. These measures could include:

– *Enhanced Surveillance*: Improving surveillance in areas where mobile money agents operate to deter potential attackers.

– *Security Training*: Providing mobile money agents with security training to equip them with the skills to respond to potential threats.

– *Collaboration with Law Enforcement*: Encouraging collaboration between mobile money agents and law enforcement agencies to share intelligence and prevent attacks.

By working together, the government, operators, and mobile money agents can help create a safer environment for everyone involved.
