Minority Seeks Clarity on GoldBod’s Gold Sourcing Amid Galamsey Concern

The Minority in Parliament is demanding answers from the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) regarding the sources of its gold purchases. They suspect the board might be buying from unregulated or illegal mining operations, which could worsen the country’s galamsey crisis.

Chairman of Parliament’s Subsidiary Legislation Committee, Patrick Boamah, expressed frustration over the GoldBod’s lack of transparency. “If you go to the Gold Board’s website right now, you will not find anything as required by the Act,” he said. The board has failed to disclose its sources of gold and make relevant data public, as mandated by law.

Boamah questioned the integrity of the board’s gold sourcing, asking: “Where is the Gold Board getting all that gold from? Is it from responsible mining? Is it from small-scale miners? Or is it from galamsey sites?” He emphasized that this lack of transparency is particularly concerning given the country’s efforts to combat galamsey, with international bodies like the World Bank and European Union watching

The Minority is urging the GoldBod to comply with its legal obligations and provide clarity on its gold sourcing practices. This includes disclosing the sources of its gold and making relevant data public, as required by Section 42 of its establishing Act.
