The Minority in Parliament has called for an emergency meeting of the Committee of the Whole to address concerns with the Electoral Commission (EC). This follows recent corrections by the EC to errors in its figures on the number of registrants during the limited voter registration exercise, held from May 7 to May 27, after prompts from the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The registration process was subsequently extended by two additional days.
Initially, the EC planned to restrict political party agents from observing the voter transfer exercise but reversed this decision following resistance from the NDC.
On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson addressed Parliament, urging the House to convene an emergency Committee of the Whole to address their pressing concerns with the EC. He emphasized the need for swift action to prevent potential harm to the country’s democratic process.
Dr. Forson acknowledged the EC’s independence but stressed that the Commission must be informed that it does not have the autonomy to make decisions that could jeopardize the peace and stability of the country and its democracy.
He voiced concern that if left unchecked, the Electoral Commission’s (EC) actions could undermine the country’s democratic stability.
