Ministry of Agriculture Initiates Seven Tomato Production Programmes in Upper East Region – John Dumelo

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has initiated seven tomato production programmes in the Upper East Region as part of efforts to boost local production and strengthen Ghana’s agricultural sector.

The initiative was disclosed by the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon and Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, who says the programmes are aimed at increasing the country’s tomato supply.

According to him, the programmes form part of broader efforts to support farmers, improve agricultural productivity and reduce the challenges associated with inadequate local tomato production.

The Upper East Region is one of Ghana’s important tomato-producing areas, with the crop serving as a major source of income for farmers and a key ingredient in household meals and the food-processing industry.

The introduction of the seven programmes is expected to support efforts to expand tomato cultivation and improve the availability of locally produced tomatoes on the Ghanaian market.

The initiative also reflects the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening domestic agricultural production and reducing reliance on imported tomatoes. Further details on the specific programmes, their implementation timelines and the number of farmers expected to benefit were not provided in the statement.
