Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has taken swift action to address the mysterious case of 1,357 missing containers of cables and equipment from the Tema Port, belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The Minister has assured accountability, recovery of losses, and reform of ECG’s procurement procedures.
To date, 40 missing containers have been found, and an Indian national has been arrested in connection with the incident. Building on this progress, Minister Jinapor has established a 6-member committee to develop a robust mechanism for tracking containers and preventing their loss during transportation.
The committee comprises representatives from:
1. Ministry of Energy and Green Transition
2. Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)
3. National Security
4. Finance Ministry
5. Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority
6. Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority
Their primary objective is to create a secure system for monitoring containers, utilizing software to track each container’s serial number. This will enable the Minister and National Security to monitor the containers 24/7, ensuring safe transportation and minimizing loss.
The committee’s terms of reference include:
– Investigating the circumstances surrounding the missing containers
– Developing a tracking system to monitor containers in real-time
– Recommending measures to prevent future losses
– Collaborating with relevant agencies to recover the remaining missing containers
Minister Jinapor has emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the committee’s work. He has assured the public that the government is committed to getting to the bottom of the missing containers saga and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.
