The Member of Parliament for Tamale South and former Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu has called on the Indonesian government to support the establishment of an Islamic Medical University in Northern Ghana.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu asserted that this initiative will help bridge the gap in medical education and provide quality healthcare training opportunities, particularly for students in the northern regions.
Speaking on the need for such an institution, Haruna Iddrisu emphasized that Northern Ghana has a significant Muslim population, making it an ideal location for an Islamic Medical University.
He noted that Indonesia, being the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country with vast experience in medical education, would be a strategic partner in realizing this vision.
“The establishment of an Islamic Medical University in Northern Ghana will not only enhance access to medical education for young people but also improve healthcare delivery in underserved communities,” he stated.
THe Minister of Education highlighted Indonesia’s strong ties with Ghana and urged both governments to explore deeper collaboration in the areas of education and healthcare.
According to him, such an institution would serve as a center for excellence in medical research and training, while also promoting cultural and academic exchanges between the two nations.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu further stressed that a specialized medical university with an Islamic foundation would provide an inclusive learning environment for students, particularly those from Muslim backgrounds, while maintaining global standards in medical education.
The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Idrissu emphasized that the partnership would significantly contribute to medical education and healthcare development in Northern Ghana and also addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals in the region.
