MINDSET TRANSFORMATION INITIATIVE COMMEMORATES JUNE 3 DISASTER – CALLS FOR COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY TO PREVENT FUTURE TRAGEDIES

Accra, Ghana — Today, June 3, 2025, marks ten years since the tragic twin disaster
that struck the nation at Kwame Nkrumah Circle — a devastating flood and fire
incident that claimed over 150 lives, left many injured, and caused immeasurable
damage to livelihoods and property. The Mindset Transformation Initiative (MTI)
solemnly commemorates this national tragedy, honouring the memories of the
departed and expressing solidarity with the survivors and affected families.
As we reflect on that dark day in Ghana’s history, we are reminded that beyond the
natural forces of rainfall, the disaster was largely exacerbated by human actions —
or inactions. Poor sanitation practices, indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains,
uncontrolled urban development, and inadequate planning all contributed to the
scale of the catastrophe.
The Mindset Transformation Initiative therefore issues a clarion call to both citizens
and duty bearers: Let us not mourn with words alone. Let us act.

Our Call to Action:
• To the Citizens:
We must adopt responsible attitudes toward waste disposal,
maintain our environments, and stop practices that block
waterways and endanger lives. National change begins with
personal accountability. Cleanliness is not just a civic duty; it is
a moral responsibility.
• To Duty Bearers (Government, MMDAs, NADMO, EPA, and
Town Planning Authorities):
The time for lip service is over. Enforcement of sanitation laws,
strict adherence to zoning and building regulations, and timely
desilting of drains must become non-negotiable. Let June 3 not
be a seasonal memory, but a standing warning against
complacency and negligence.
• To the Media and Civil Society:
Continue to educate, inform, and advocate. Use your
platforms to promote behavioural change, demand

accountability, and support efforts that transform mindsets
toward national development.
The Mindset Transformation Initiative remains committed to engaging
communities, institutions, and leadership in efforts that drive national renewal
through responsible behaviour and positive cultural change.
Never Again!
Let the legacy of June 3 be a new era of consciousness, responsibility, and resilience
— not just mourning the past, but preventing the next disaster.
May the souls of the departed continue to rest in peace.
