Military deployed to Mion and Kulkpeni amid tensions over new market

The military has been deployed to the Mion and Kulkpeni communities in the Northern Region following tensions sparked by the alleged illegal opening of a market at Kulkpeni by the Konkombas.

On Saturday, August 17, the military intervened to prevent violence from escalating in these communities.

The tension arose after a communal clash in Zogbei, Mion District, two weeks ago, which resulted in the loss of over seven lives.

In response, the Konkombas in the Mion District decided to boycott the Mion market and establish their own market in the Kulkpeni community near Yendi.

This decision significantly heightened tensions in the Yendi and Mion districts, with residents from both areas threatening to forcibly close the Kulkpeni market.

The Yendi Municipal Security Council urged that proper procedures be followed to officially open the market, but these efforts have not been successful.

Today [Friday, August 23], being a scheduled market day, fears of potential violence led to the deployment of military forces to prevent any unrest.
