Milan epic comeback win Supercoppa thriller in Derby della Madonnina

Inter were on course for an unprecedented fourth straight Supercoppa Italiana success at 2-0 up in Riyadh, but AC Milan had other ideas. Conceicao becomes the first Milan coach to win his first two matches in charge across all competitions since Filippo Inzaghi in 2014.

Milan staged a dramatic comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in stoppages with Rafael Leao inspiring all three goals, ending Inter’s Supercoppa Italiana domination in Riyadh  on Monday night.

The Nerazzurri had beaten Atalanta 2-0 in their semi-final, while the Rossoneri fought back for a 2-1 win against Juventus on new coach Conceicao’s debut en route to the final.

Simone Inzaghi’s side began the game the better and went into the break in the lead thanks to a Lautaro Martínez goal late into the first half when the Argentinian finished off a fine flowing attack.

However, Milan fought back and reduced the deficit just a few minutes later when Theo Hernández curled a low free-kick into the corner past the reach of Yann Sommer.

Hernández was involved in the equaliser as well when he was released down the left channel and put the ball in the area for Christian Pulisic to make it 2-2 in the 80th minute.

Tammy Abraham clinched the winner in the third of five minutes of extra-time when Rafael Leão was fed into the box and pulled the ball back into the danger area for the English striker to complete the turnaround.

Milan celebrate Supercoppa Itialiana win

“I am very happy for the players, because it was not easy. The atmosphere wasn’t the best when I arrived, there wasn’t much time to work on the details before these two games and we were up against two top level sides,” Conceicao told reportsers.

“The players were magical, they absorbed everything we discussed and clearly there are things we need to improve, but they are aware of that. I feel that with humility, we can have some great months together in the Champions League, Serie A and to take Milan where it deserves to be.“Now we are happy, we celebrate and from tomorrow we will begin to focus on Cagliari.”, he added.

The victory means Milan have secured their eighth Supercoppa Italiana and moved them level with Inter, with only Juventus (nine) triumphing on more occasion.
