The Media Coalition Against Galamsey is calling on the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, to extend the government’s crackdown on illegal mining activities beyond Akonta Mining Limited.
Speaking to Ahotor News, the Convener of the Coalition, Dr. Ing. Ken Ashigbey, stressed that while recent attention on Akonta Mining is welcome, focusing solely on one company risks allowing other illegal operators to continue unchecked across the country.
“We commend the Minister for taking steps to address issues around Akonta Mining, but the problem of galamsey is far more widespread,” Dr. Ashigbey noted. “There are many other actors across the country engaged in equally destructive and unlawful mining operations. The fight must be holistic and sustained.”
Dr. Ashigbey emphasized that illegal mining is not just an environmental issue but a national crisis with far-reaching implications on public health, food security, and access to clean water.
He urged the Ministry to prioritize enforcement, transparency, and community engagement in its strategy going forward.
