Malawi Football Mourns: Legend Esau Kanyenda Passes Away at 43

Malawi football is mourning the loss of legendary striker Esau “Black Mamba” Kanyenda, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 43, just a day after revealing he was battling liver cancer. The Malawi Football Association confirmed the news, leaving fans and the football community in shock.

 

Kanyenda’s impressive career spanned over two decades, with notable stints at Jomo Cosmos in South Africa, Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia, and Mighty Wanderers in Malawi. He was a key player for the Malawi national team, earning 72 caps and scoring 22 goals, and was instrumental in leading the team to the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.

 

Known for his lightning-fast speed and deadly precision in front of goal, Kanyenda was nicknamed the “Black Mamba” and became a beloved figure in Malawian football. His achievements on the pitch earned him recognition as Malawian Footballer of the Year in 2001 and 2002.
