Majority of us do not have licenses to operate – Okada Drivers Association President.

Maxwell Akakpo, President of the Okada Drivers Association in the Ketu South constituency, has revealed that most of the members, including himself, do not possess the required licenses to operate as okada (motorcycle taxi) riders.

Speaking during a media engagement in the constituency, Akakpo explained that the high cost of obtaining a license has prevented many riders from becoming properly licensed, resulting in their operations being technically illegal.

He admitted that when the police arrest them, they often have to plead to avoid further legal consequences, as their lack of licenses could lead to imprisonment.

Despite their experience and dedication to the job, Akakpo noted that the lack of a license significantly affects their ability to work smoothly. He called on authorities to simplify the process and make it more affordable for okada riders to obtain licenses.

Akakpo highlighted that the Ketu South constituency alone has over 42 branches of okada operations, involving more than 10,000 riders. However, he emphasized that only a small fraction of these riders are licensed, underscoring the widespread issue of unlicensed okada operations in the area.
