Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has strongly opposed the renewed call by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for the construction of a new parliamentary chamber and a dedicated hospital for Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff.
Ayariga dismissed the proposal, citing the current economic challenges facing the country as a more urgent priority.
Speaking on the matter, Ayariga emphasized that at a time when many Ghanaians are struggling with economic hardship, inflation, and inadequate social services, it would be inappropriate for Parliament to prioritize such an expensive project.
He argued that limited national resources should be directed toward addressing pressing issues such as improving healthcare, education, and infrastructure for the general population rather than catering to the specific needs of legislators.
The Majority Leader’s stance is in direct contrast to Afenyo-Markin’s argument that a modern chamber would enhance parliamentary proceedings and that a specialized hospital is necessary to ensure the well-being of MPs and staff.
However, Ayariga insisted that lawmakers should focus on policies that benefit all Ghanaians rather than seeking preferential treatment for themselves.
