The National Democratic Congress (NDC) aims to win all future elections to form a government and govern the country. The roles of the government and the country are intertwined, but it is the party that puts the government in place. Therefore, the party needs to restructure and pursue its agenda to win future elections, especially in 2028.
Mahdi Jibril, the Deputy Director of Elections for the NDC, disclosed this on Adekyee Mu Nsem on Ahotor FM 92.3 in Accra. He believes that the party is the political vehicle that brings the government into power, creating opportunities for party faithfuls in the development of the country. The party acts as a platform for everyone to pursue the vision and development of the country.
Jibril emphasized that the primary role of the party is to put systems in place to win and continue winning future elections. He contrasted the current president’s appointments to ministerial portfolios with the misguided judgment exhibited by the New Patriotic Party under former president Nana Addo Dankwa. The current president is focused on his team and vision for national development.
Jibril believes that credibility and competence are evident across all ministerial nominees appointed by the president. He noted that the previous government appointed about 125 ministers, but their stewardship over eight years showed that many ministerial portfolios were merely political posts without effective roles in achieving targets. In contrast, President Mahama’s smaller team of 60 ministers is expected to bring effectiveness and responsibility in achieving targets and resetting the country on a better economic path for national development.
In response to youth agitation over ministerial appointments, Jibril expressed disappointment and discouragement at how some party executives have fomented tension in constituencies without justification. He stressed that the party campaigned for a lean government, and it would not be appropriate to change the policy agenda that brought the government into power.
Jibril opined that the parochial interest of people seeking party work at all costs must stop. Instead, patience and focus on prosecuting the national agenda of the party to create jobs for all in the best interest of the country are needed. He believes that party faithfuls should support the party and the appointed ministers to bring the party back to power.
Regarding the outstanding contested seats in court after the 2024 elections, Jibril stated that the party’s legal team is in touch with all affected members of parliament to find lasting solutions to all cases in court. He debunked the idea that the party hierarchy has abandoned the pending cases, emphasizing that this notion is unfortunate and disturbing.
