The Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril, has dismissed concerns surrounding the party’s constituency elections in Dome-Kwabenya, insisting that the process was conducted properly and transparently.
Speaking in a telephone interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme with Nana Dogbe, Mr Jibril accused some party members of attempting to create confusion following their defeat. He said the party’s structures were addressing the disagreements and would not allow individuals to undermine its internal electoral processes.
Mr Jibril explained that Dome-Kwabenya was among the constituencies scheduled to vote on October 24, but the process faced uncertainty after reports that some members had gone to court to seek an injunction.
He said the party had not received any official court order stopping the election. According to him, checks revealed that the document served was a notification rather than an injunction, meaning the process could proceed.
Mr Jibril said officials of the Electoral Commission at the district level were nevertheless unwilling to conduct the election, for reasons best known to them. He added that the party subsequently agreed to proceed with the exercise using its own electoral structures.
He further stated that the election was conducted with the participation of all candidates, including the individual who had reportedly sought the court intervention. According to him, the voting, counting and declaration of results were completed, with candidates and supporters celebrating afterwards.
Mr Jibril questioned why some candidates who participated in the election later held a press conference to challenge the process after losing. He argued that their participation, including the presence of their agents and requests for a recount, contradicted their subsequent claims that the election was improperly conducted.
He also rejected claims that the election should be annulled because voting started late, questioning whether a delay in commencing the exercise was sufficient grounds to invalidate the results.
The NDC elections director described the allegations as mischief intended to damage the party’s image in the constituency. He warned that the party would take appropriate measures against members found to be undermining its structures for personal interests.
The disagreement in Dome-Kwabenya follows the NDC’s constituency-level elections held on October 24, 2026, as part of the party’s internal electoral process to elect constituency executives. The exercise has since become contentious, with some members questioning aspects of its conduct and calling for the results to be annulled. The concerns have brought the constituency’s internal electoral arrangements under scrutiny as the party prepares for its next phase of elections.
Mr Jibril urged party members to remain disciplined and avoid actions that could create divisions as the party prepares for its regional executive elections.
The NDC is scheduled to elect its regional executives on November 13 and 14, 2026. The first day is expected to be dedicated to elections for youth and women’s organisers, while the main regional executive elections will take place on November 14. However, some regions are expected to conduct all their elections on the second day.
He said preparations were ongoing across the country, with the party and its electoral structures working to ensure that the elections were successfully conducted.
