The Deputy Minister of Health in Ghana, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, highlighted the prudent measures taken by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama in the health sector through the Ministry of Health during the 50th launch celebration of the College of Community Health Nursing (CCHN) on 6th November, 2025.
She mentioned the improvements made in the nursing training allowance payment system, which is now channeled through the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to the various banks to ensure regular and punctual payments to nursing students with proper accountability.
She also addressed the issue of unemployed nurses and mentioned that efforts are being made to complete enough health facilities to absorb these nurses into the workforce.
The establishment of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, formerly known as the Mahama Care, after parliamentary approval, was also highlighted as a way to address specialized disease conditions and provide necessary Medical Equipment to Hospitals. She revealed that the government through this Fund and the Ministry of Health donated 8 top-quality Anaesthesia machines to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, and is currently conducting a survey to equip all hospitals, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances or overcrowding a single hospital. She believes this will change the mindset of seeking healthcare abroad and instead, attract individuals from other countries to seek treatment in Ghana.
Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah commended the collaborative efforts of her Minister, Hon. Mintah Akandoh, in improving the health system without partisan bias. Plans to elevate the Trauma and Specialist Hospital to a Specialized Hospital were also mentioned, along with the government’s employment of 700 Medical Doctors to address the shortage of Doctors in various regions. She assured that the distribution of Medical Doctors would be equitable across all regions, with a focus on providing accommodations and necessary resources for healthcare workers.
The Deputy Minister also emphasized the need for specialized care in Trauma and Specialist Hospital due to the high rate of accident cases on the Accra to Cape Coast Road, and as she holds a speciality in Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery with General Surgery, she promised to make Trauma Hospital a super specialized field with highly qualified professionals.
