Mahama Dismisses Petitions to Remove EC Chair, Deputies, and Special Prosecutor

President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed all petitions seeking the removal of Electoral Commission (EC) Chair Jean Mensa, her deputies Dr. Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey, and Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.

In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, dated Wednesday, February 18, 2026, the President closed the matter after the Chief Justice determined no prima facie case existed.

The petitions, totaling ten, alleged misconduct, cronyism, abuse of office, and gross incompetence, claiming these had eroded public trust. One was reportedly filed by EC staffer Joseph Blankson Adumadzie, though details remain confidential under constitutional provisions.

Under Ghana’s Constitution, such petitions require the Chief Justice’s initial assessment before any investigation. With no case established, President Mahama ended proceedings.

The government used the announcement to reaffirm fiscal stability, noting a recent sixth coupon settlement under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP)—the second full cash payment without Payment-In-Kind (PIK) components. This covers cedi-denominated obligations per the restructuring memorandum, signaling strengthened fiscal capacity to investors.

The Ministry highlighted improved macroeconomic fundamentals, declining inflation, lower interest rates, a stable cedi, and strong buffers as factors supporting future DDEP payments and broader debt management.

This development is expected to boost market confidence, Ghana’s credit outlook, and financial sector stability, including banks and pension funds.
