Former President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed claims that he would cancel the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program as a baseless political ploy.
Assuring Ghanaians of his commitment, Mr. Mahama stated that the Free SHS initiative is here to stay, and he aims to implement measures to ensure its sustainability and improve its quality.
Speaking at the Mahama Fellowship with the Clergy meeting in Kumasi on November 11, John Mahama highlighted the critical role of education in Ghana’s future.
He emphasized that rumors about canceling Free SHS are politically motivated distractions.
“Free SHS has come to stay; it has increased access to education, but we must secure its funding to guarantee its continuation,” he affirmed.
John Mahama outlined several reforms he would implement to enhance the program.
He promised to provide schools with direct funding to purchase locally-sourced, quality food supplies, reducing the dependency on the National Buffer Stock Company and ensuring students have access to nutritious meals.
He also vowed to resume the construction of the abandoned E-Blocks started during his previous term to help alleviate overcrowding.
Additionally, Mr. Mahama proposed the creation of a dedicated fund to secure stable, long-term financing for Free SHS and pledged to extend the policy to include private senior high schools, easing the burden on public institutions.
