National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has voiced his disapproval of President Akufo-Addo’s decision to unveil a statue of himself, questioning the timing and priorities of such a gesture amid Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges.
Speaking at Gomoa Buduburam in the Gomoa East constituency during his Central Regional tour, Mr. Mahama expressed his surprise and disappointment, suggesting that President Akufo-Addo should let his achievements speak for themselves rather than seeking self-promotion during a period when many Ghanaians are struggling.
“It’s disheartening to see the president focus on erecting a statue of himself while Ghanaians are experiencing serious hardships,” John Mahama said.
“True leaders allow their work to build a legacy; they don’t build monuments to themselves when the people are suffering. A statue should reflect accomplishments recognized by others, not self-constructed praise.”
John Mahama also criticized the pressure he believes Akufo-Addo has exerted on institutions to honor him with accolades.
“He’s pressed universities to grant him honorary doctorates. But where does this take us when the average Ghanaian is facing economic challenges?” he asked.
The recent unveiling of Akufo-Addo’s statue at the entrance of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi has sparked considerable debate among Ghanaians, with John Mahama stressing that such symbolic gestures are not what the country needs at this time.
He urged Ghanaians to consider the current administration’s actions and avoid repeating what he calls the “mistake” of entrusting the nation to the NPP.
“The last time we welcomed the ‘elephant,’ it wreaked havoc,” he remarked. “This December, let the NDC’s ‘umbrella’ shield the country from the mess left behind by the NPP.”
In a pointed critique of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, John Mahama accused him of sidestepping responsibility during tough times while taking credit when things go well.
“Dr. Bawumia calls himself a ‘driver’s mate,’ distancing himself from the government’s failures, yet he’s quick to claim successes.”
Expressing confidence in an NDC victory in the upcoming December 7th elections, John Mahama pledged to “reset the country” and restore it to a path of stability and growth, prioritizing the well-being of every Ghanaian.
