Mahama Ayariga Condemns Military Brutalities in Bawku, Demands Accountability and Justice

The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has issued a scathing condemnation of the military’s actions in Bawku following the killing of a soldier by an unknown gunman. He described the military’s response, which involved alleged brutalities against civilians, as “unacceptable and unjustifiable,” calling for urgent accountability and justice for the victims.

In a strongly-worded statement on March 18, 2025, Ayariga expressed his deep regret over the soldier’s death but insisted that retaliatory violence against innocent civilians was not the solution. Reports of soldiers ransacking homes, assaulting civilians, and imposing fear in the municipality have sparked widespread outrage.

“The rule of law must prevail at all times,” Ayariga declared. “The security forces, who are entrusted with maintaining law and order, must uphold the highest standards of professionalism and accountability. Actions that violate the rights of innocent civilians only deepen the wounds of an already fragile situation.”

The MP called on the military and local leaders in Bawku to collaborate in investigating the soldier’s killing rather than resorting to heavy-handed reprisals. He emphasized the need for a peaceful and constructive approach to restore calm in the conflict-ridden area.

Ayariga also extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased soldier, while expressing solidarity with the victims of the military’s alleged actions. He voiced his disappointment with the military command for disregarding his earlier appeals to avoid violence, stressing that the heavy-handed approach only exacerbates tensions.

“We need to prioritize dialogue and mutual respect. There is no room for acts that undermine the rule of law and the dignity of the people,” he stated.

The Bawku legislator further expressed optimism in the ongoing efforts of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, to mediate a lasting solution to the decades-old conflict in Bawku. Ayariga urged all parties to support the Asantehene’s leadership in bringing an end to the cycle of violence.

“I am confident that His Majesty the Asantehene’s wisdom and leadership will guide us toward a peaceful resolution. It is imperative that all stakeholders place trust in his mediation to achieve lasting peace in Bawku,” Ayariga added.

The Bawku conflict, rooted in ethnic and chieftaincy disputes, has long been a thorn in Ghana’s quest for national security and stability. The recent events further underscore the need for comprehensive strategies to address the underlying issues and prevent future escalations.
