The Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has issued a passionate call for peace and unity in the wake of violent clashes in Bawku that resulted in tragic fatalities and the vandalization of his private residence.
In a statement released while he was on an official assignment abroad, Mr. Ayariga expressed profound sorrow over the loss of lives and the attack on his home, which included an attempt to set it ablaze. He attributed the unrest to long-standing frustrations over unresolved chieftaincy disputes in the area and alleged misconduct by some members of law enforcement.
“I deeply sympathize with the anger and frustration of the youth regarding the pace of resolving the Bawku and Kusaaug chieftaincy matters, as well as reports of misconduct by certain law enforcement officers. However, violence is not the answer,” he said.
The MP condemned the recent clashes between the youth and security forces, which have not only claimed lives but also escalated tensions in an already volatile situation. Despite these challenges, he reaffirmed his commitment to a peaceful resolution through lawful and constitutional means.
Support for the Peace Process
Mr. Ayariga lauded the ongoing mediation efforts led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in collaboration with other respected traditional leaders, including the Overlords of Kusaaug and Mamprugu. He emphasized the importance of respecting judicial decisions and adhering to Ghana’s legal framework to resolve the deep-rooted conflict.
“The peace process requires our collective patience, discipline, and faith in the institutions working tirelessly to bring lasting harmony to our communities,” he said.
Rejects Political Smear Campaign
The MP also took the opportunity to address what he described as a politically motivated smear campaign against him. He dismissed allegations circulating on social media, accusing his political opponents of attempting to exploit the unrest for electoral gains.
“These baseless accusations will not distract me. I remain focused on my duty to serve the people of Bawku and Kusaaug. Truth and justice will prevail,” he stated emphatically.
A Call for Restraint and Unity
In his appeal to the people of Bawku, Mr. Ayariga urged residents to remain calm and refrain from actions that could jeopardize the fragile peace. He also called on the youth to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain security and order in the area.
“I urge everyone to exercise restraint and avoid actions that may inflame tensions further. Let us work together to restore peace and unity in Bawku. My commitment to achieving a lasting and peaceful resolution remains unwavering,” he concluded.
Moving Forward
As Bawku grapples with its challenges, Mr. Ayariga’s call for calm and his reaffirmation of support for the peace process serve as a reminder of the importance of dialogue and collaboration in resolving conflicts. His assurance of solidarity with his constituents highlights his dedication to securing a brighter and more harmonious future for the people of Bawku and Kusaaug.
This message resonates as both a plea for unity and a commitment to peace during these trying times.
