Spokesperson of the National Okada riders, Solomon Akpanaba, has shed light on the challenges facing the okada business in Ghana.
With over 1 million okada riders nationwide, the business is undoubtedly the largest transportation industry in the country. However, despite its significance, the okada business operates in a gray area, with many regarding it as illegal.
One of the major challenges facing the okada business is the proliferation of fake motorcycles. Although many riders have registered their bikes, the presence of unregistered and fake motorcycles poses a significant threat to the industry.
Solomon Akpanaba, was speaking with the Citizen Kofi Owusu on Ahotor fm 92.3, Adekye mu nsem.
Akpanaba has been advocating for the legalization of the okada business since 2010, and he remains optimistic that the government will eventually regularize the industry.
Mr Akpanaba also admitted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s initiative to regularize the okada operation has been met with enthusiasm from the majority of okada riders.
He believes that regularization will not only legitimize the business but also help eradicate the rampant armed robbery cases involving some okada riders.
