Leadership will respond to your petition – Prof Gyampo replies UTAG silent majority.
Professor Ransford Gyampo, President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at UG-Legon, has addressed a petition from a group calling themselves the “Silent Majority” within UTAG.
This group issued a three-day ultimatum, urging the leadership to end their ongoing strike, citing no justification for it, especially after Organized Labour had called off their strike due to government promises to tackle illegal mining, or “galamsey.”
During an interview on Ahotor FM with Emmanuel Martey, also known as Alaska De don, Prof. Gyampo revealed that, based on his findings, 36 of the 57 signatories to the petition are not lecturers at any university in Ghana.
Additionally, some individuals within the remaining group of signatories have since denied being aware of or consenting to the petition. He questioned how a small group of 57 could overturn a decision made by more than 3,000 UTAG members nationwide.
Prof. Gyampo emphasized that while he would typically dismiss such petitions, UTAG’s leadership intends to clarify their stance and reasons for the strike, ensuring that their members and the public understand the situation.
He also mentioned the importance of educating the petitioners on UTAG’s norms, as they have no authority to overturn the majority decision.
In conclusion, Prof. Gyampo reiterated that UTAG’s strike concerning the government’s handling of illegal mining remains ongoing, and leadership will continue engaging members, particularly those involved in the petition, to foster better understanding.
