Leadership Begins in the Classroom – Vice President Urges Students to Uphold Integrity and Positive Ambition

Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has urged students across the country to cultivate good character, integrity, and positive ambition, stressing that the journey to national leadership begins in the classroom.

Speaking at the PENSA Ghana Conference held at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region, the Vice President cautioned students against academic dishonesty, describing it as more than a minor mistake.

According to her, acts such as cheating and taking undue shortcuts in school are early warning signs that can shape negative attitudes later in life.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that habits formed in school often follow individuals into their professional and public lives. “When a shortcut becomes normal in the classroom, it does not vanish in professional life,” she noted, adding that integrity is a foundational value for anyone aspiring to leadership or national service.

She encouraged students to see education not merely as a means to secure certificates, but as a process of building character, discipline and a strong moral compass.

She further urged them to pursue excellence through hard work, honesty and perseverance, assuring them that genuine success is built on ethical conduct.

The Vice President also challenged young people to nurture positive ambition by setting clear goals and committing themselves to making meaningful contributions to society.

She reminded them that Ghana’s future leadership depends largely on the values today’s students choose to uphold.
