Launch of ‘Adwumawura’: A New Era for Youth Empowerment in Ghana

The Government of Ghana, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, has unveiled the groundbreaking ‘Adwumawura’ Initiative, a flagship program designed to transform the entrepreneurial landscape for Ghanaian youth. The initiative was officially launched on April 28 in Kumasi by the Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, Mr. George Opare Addo, and is poised to empower 10,000 young entrepreneurs annually.

A Commitment to Youth Development

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Opare Addo highlighted the establishment of the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment as a testament to the government’s unwavering dedication to youth-focused programs. “‘Adwumawura,’ which means ‘Job Owner’ in Akan, represents our collective resolve to create pathways for youth empowerment,” he stated.

He called on young Ghanaians to embrace the opportunities presented by the initiative, urging them to take an active role in shaping their futures. “This is the dawn of a new era, the beginning of the reset agenda. This is your moment. The Adwumawura Programme is designed with your success in mind. Embrace it, and together, let us forge a nation of innovators and entrepreneurs,” he said.

A Vision for a Thriving Economy

President Mahama emphasized the initiative’s alignment with his broader vision of a 24-hour economy. He noted that Adwumawura complements the recently launched One Million Coders Programme, further cementing his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment.

“Through this programme, we will incubate new businesses and accelerate existing ones. Whether you are starting afresh or seeking to grow your business, Adwumawura is here for you,” he assured.

The President reiterated his government’s commitment to investing in the future of young Ghanaians, stating, “Let your dreams take flight. Let your innovations find expression. The future is not something we wait upon; it is something we build together, starting today.”

Inclusive and Equitable Opportunities

To ensure inclusivity, 60% of Adwumawura’s beneficiaries will be from marginalized communities, including women and girls, persons with disabilities, unemployed youth, out-of-school youth, and those in rural and mining areas. The program requires no specific educational qualifications but mandates applicants to be fully Ghanaian.

Beneficiaries will receive a comprehensive package of support, including:

Business development training

Access to funding

Coaching and mentorship

Technological support

Market access and facilitation

Equipment and machinery access

367 days of business advisory services

Fully Funded and Internationally Backed

President Mahama announced that the program is fully funded under the 2025 budget and called on international partners to contribute resources, expertise, and logistics through the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) to maximize its impact.

An annual Adwumawura Trade Fair and Exhibition will also be organized to showcase the creativity and innovations of beneficiaries, offering them marketing opportunities and connections with investors.

A Step Towards Ghana’s Reset

Otumfuor Bemkumehene Nana Okyere Kusi Ntrama, paramount chief of Essumeja, applauded the initiative, describing it as a fulfillment of a key campaign promise by President Mahama. “This program positions Ghana on the right path to success, giving our youth a fair share of the nation’s opportunities,” he said.

He further expressed optimism that the initiative would help eradicate youth unemployment and reduce social vices by providing sustainable jobs and revenue streams.

A User-Friendly Application Process

Mark Gumah, a member of NEIP’s engineering team, provided a detailed presentation on how interested applicants can register for the program. In addition to an online portal, forms are available at district, municipal, and metropolitan assemblies, as well as YEA offices nationwide, to ensure accessibility for all.

The Adwumawura Initiative is a bold step toward empowering Ghana’s youth, fostering innovation, and reshaping the nation’s economy. As Ghana’s young people rise to the challenge, the program promises to unlock a brighter and more prosperous future for generations to come.
