Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Reflects on Busy Transition Period and Future Plans

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has had a remarkable career, serving as the longest-serving lawmaker in Ghana. Born on February 3, 1957, he hails from Bremang-Afrancho, a town in Kumasi, Ashanti Region. With a degree in Urban Planning from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, he has made significant contributions to Ghana’s development.

As a member of the New Patriotic Party, he first became a member of Parliament in January 1997, representing the people of Old Tafo in the Suame Constituency of the Ashanti Region. He has since been re-elected multiple times, serving in various capacities, including as Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.

Interestingly, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has announced his intention to retire from active politics in 2025, coinciding with the end of the eighth session of Parliament. Despite his decision, he has expressed no regrets about his 23 years as a Member of Parliament, describing it as a “most gratifying and challenging” experience.

Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who entered Parliament in 1997 at the age of 40, leaving a significant mark on Ghana’s political landscape, noted that life beyond Parliament was not yet in full motion.

“There’s a lot more to do, but I will take time to finish what I’ve started before thinking about a break.”
