Kwame Dadzie Claps Back at Hon. Habib Iddrisu Over “Disrespect” to John Dumelo and Creative Arts

The vetting of Ghanaian actor-turned-politician John Dumelo for the role of Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Food has taken an unexpected turn after remarks made by Hon. Alhaji Habib Iddrisu sparked outrage within the entertainment industry.

During the vetting, Hon. Iddrisu reportedly dismissed Dumelo’s credibility, stating, “John Dumelo is not in his movie industry, so he should try to be serious.” The statement, seen as belittling Dumelo’s profession and transition into politics, has stirred a heated debate.

In response, popular Ghanaian broadcaster Kwame Dadzie took to Facebook to express his frustration, calling out the MP for disrespecting creatives.

His post read:

“Enough of the disrespect toward creatives. Do you think it’s a joke to be on stage acting? Do you think an MP chewing ballot paper in Parliament is a more serious activity than an actor getting into character on stage? Do you think writing stories and producing them in movies is not a serious business? This ‘Honourable’ (Alhaji Habib Iddrisu) should be made to retract those words and apologise. Enough!”

Dadzie’s sharp response not only defended Dumelo but also highlighted the long-standing under-evaluation of the creative industry in Ghana. Many actors, filmmakers, and musicians have since echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the arts are a powerful economic and cultural force that deserves respect.

Social media has since been buzzing, with a majority supporting Dadze’s stance, while others argue that politics and entertainment should be viewed separately.

John Dumelo has yet to respond publicly to the controversy, but his nomination has undoubtedly reignited discussions on the place of creatives in governance.

As tensions rise, many are waiting to see whether Hon. Habib Iddrisu will clarify or retract his statement. One thing is clear—this debate has once again put the spotlight on the respect (or lack thereof) for Ghana’s creative industry in political spaces.
