Ghanaian actress Mercy Asiedu recently spoke out about the perceived decline of the Kumawood film industry.
During an interview with Hitz FM on October 8, 2024, she refuted claims that the industry is dead, emphasizing that its current challenges stem from a lack of technological advancement rather than a shortage of talent.
Asiedu highlighted the abundance of talented actors, actresses, and producers within the industry, asserting that the main issue lies in the outdated technology used for movie distribution.
According to her, the shift from physical CD sales to digital platforms has significantly impacted the industry’s ability to thrive.
She explained that producers used to recoup their investments quickly through CD sales, a model that has become obsolete due to the decline in CD purchases.
The actress attributed the industry’s struggles to a failure to adapt to changing technology, noting that industry players were slow to embrace digital distribution platforms. She pointed out that the industry’s reluctance to adopt new technologies has hindered its ability to remain relevant in the modern era.
Despite these challenges, Asiedu remained optimistic about the future of the Kumawood industry, stating that it is not dead but rather in need of a technological update.
She emphasized the importance of embracing new distribution methods and adapting to the evolving landscape of the film industry to revitalize Kumawood’s presence in the market.
