Kumasi Begs Government: Prioritize Expressway Before It’s Too Late

Former Kumasi Municipal Assembly (KMA) Presiding Member, Hon. Abraham Boadi, widely known as Opooman, has appealed to the government to prioritize the construction of the Accra-Kumasi road, reiterating its critical importance for the economic development of Kumasi. His comments come in response to recent remarks by Bantama Member of Parliament, Francis Asenso-Boakye, who urged President Mahama to reconsider plans for a new Accra-Kumasi expressway. Asenso-Boakye expressed concerns about the potential wastefulness and the possibility of abandoning the current dualization project on the route.

Hon. Boadi firmly disagreed with the Bantama lawmaker’s position, arguing that the construction of the Accra-Kumasi road is indispensable for attracting investments to Kumasi. He warned that without the timely upgrade and completion of this major infrastructure, potential investors might lose interest in the Ashanti Region’s commercial hub. According to him, the road project holds significant economic stakes that go beyond political considerations and must be approached with urgency and commitment.

Highlighting the long-standing infrastructural challenges faced by Kumasi, the former presiding member stressed that the government’s focus should be on completing existing road projects rather than shelving them due to political disagreements. He urged stakeholders to recognize that the road project is a fundamental backbone for facilitating trade, movement, and development in the region, and not a political pawn in partisan debates.

Hon. Boadi’s appeal underscores the broader concern shared by many residents and business operators in Kumasi who are eager for improved transport infrastructure. The call is clear: the government must ensure that the Accra-Kumasi road construction progresses without delay, and all parties should prioritize the long-term socio-economic benefits it promises over any political differences.
