The Krontihene of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Council, Obrempong Dr. Gyemfi Sarfo Kyere II, has strongly criticized the Member of Parliament for Birim Central Constituency, Alexander Akwasi Aquah, for allegedly making false accusations against the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Birim Central, Solomon Kusi Brako.
According to Obrempong Dr. Kyere II, the MP falsely claimed on a radio program that the MCE was sabotaging the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining (galamsey) by allegedly extorting money from miners operating in the municipality.
Clarifying the issue, the Krontihene explained that a portion of the mining concession belonging to Akwatia GCD has been allocated to some local youth, most of whom hail from Akyem Gyadam, since the land falls under the Akyem Gyadam Stool. He noted that a few individuals who moved from Akyem Oda to work on parts of the concession were asked by the Assembly to register their operations and obtain the necessary permits—even if they had authorization from GCD.
However, these individuals reportedly refused to comply, prompting the Assembly to enforce its bylaws by imposing a GH¢15,000 fine and halting their operations. “Given these facts, I don’t understand why the MP would go on air to accuse the MCE falsely when he knows very well about the Assembly’s bylaws,” Obrempong stated.
The Krontihene also accused the MP of disrespecting traditional authority in Akyem Oda, emphasizing that since his election to Parliament nearly four years ago, Mr. Aquah has never visited the Oda Palace to engage in any discussions with the Omanhene. He added that the MP repeatedly ignores calls from the Omanhene, a gesture he described as highly disrespectful to traditional leadership.
