The Kpone Landfill Waste Pickers Association has rejected a JoyNews report alleging that some of its members collect and sell expired products from the Kpone landfill, describing the report as false, misleading and damaging to the reputation of its members.
Speaking to the media, Chairman of the association, Mr. Divine Dekonor, said members are involved solely in waste recovery and recycling activities, where they collect recyclable materials for sale to recycling companies.
He denied claims that members of the association engage in the collection and sale of expired products, adding that such allegations are untrue.
According to Mr. Dekonor, expired products are disposed of in accordance with guidelines from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and under the supervision of relevant environmental health authorities.
He urged the public to disregard the report, insisting that the activities of the association are focused on supporting environmental cleanliness and recycling.
Members of the Kpone Landfill Waste Pickers Association also dismissed the allegations, saying they would not engage in activities that could endanger consumers.
They explained that many of them have families who purchase food and other items from the market, and therefore would not participate in the sale of expired products that could harm the public.
The members added that the association comprises people from different backgrounds who rely on waste picking and recycling for their livelihoods, stressing that they would not do anything to undermine the work that supports their families.
They have appealed to the public to disregard the report and treat the allegations as false.
