Kpandai RERUN: NDC Must Seize Every Opportunity to Contest Disputed Seats – Abraham Koomson

Tema, Ghana, 29 November: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Mr. Abraham Koomson, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain resolute and contest every parliamentary seat that presents legal or electoral issues.

According to him, securing more seats from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) will significantly weaken the party’s influence and prevent it from returning to power, given what he described as its poor performance while in government.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, November 29, Mr. Koomson specifically encouraged the NDC to “go all out” and win the upcoming parliamentary rerun in the Kpandai constituency.

“The NDC should be poised. They should go all out and contest any seat that has issues. And if they end up taking all such seats, I will be very happy,” he said.

His remarks follow a ruling by the Tamale High Court ordering a fresh parliamentary election in Kpandai. The court, presided over by His Lordship Emmanuel Brew Plange, directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct the rerun within 30 days.

The ruling resulted from a petition filed by former MP and NDC parliamentary candidate Daniel Nsala Wakpal, who challenged the election of Matthew Nyindam as Member of Parliament.

Mr. Wakpal argued that the December 7 parliamentary election was compromised by major irregularities, citing inconsistencies on FORM 8A (Pink Sheets) across 41 out of 152 polling stations. The court agreed that these irregularities undermined the credibility of both the voting and collation processes, necessitating a rerun.

Meanwhile, incumbent MP Matthew Nyindam has stated that he remains unfazed by the decision and is fully prepared to contest again if the process requires it.

The Electoral Commission is expected to outline the modalities for the fresh election in the coming days. However, Mr. Koomson insists that the NDC must be fully prepared to claim the seat.

He argued that Ghanaian workers suffered immensely under the NPP administration and urged voters not to allow the party back into power.

“As a unionist, the suffering Akufo-Addo brought to workers was unbearable. Look at the bank closures, the haircut, and the rest. We cannot afford to entertain this kind of mindset again. The NDC needs to remain focused,” he added.
