Kotoko pip Hearts in Super Clash, Mars Birthday Celebrations

In a pulsating Ghana Premier League clash at the Accra Sports Stadium, Asante Kotoko edged bitter rivals Hearts of Oak 1-0 on Sunday, courtesy of a 44th-minute penalty from Morifin Donzo.

The result not only handed Kotoko bragging rights in the latest installment of Ghana’s fiercest derby but also snapped Hearts’ impressive eight-game unbeaten run to open the season.

The Porcupines have now won four of their last five league games against Hearts of Oak with one ending in a draw.

Both sides entered the fixture with unbeaten records—Hearts boasting eight straight without defeat, while Kotoko carried momentum from their own solid start.

The Porcupine Warriors, however, emerged victorious in a match defined by tactical discipline, high pressing, and clinical efficiency in the final third.

Hearts of Oak, under coach Didi Dramani, aimed to dictate play through their preferred build-from-the-back philosophy. The Phobians controlled possession for large spells, circulating the ball patiently from goalkeeper to defense.

Yet, Kotoko’s aggressive high press, orchestrated by head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, disrupted this approach relentlessly.

Kotoko forwards and midfielders swarmed Hearts’ backline in their own half, forcing hurried passes and turnovers. The strategy paid dividends as Hearts struggled to progress the ball into dangerous areas.

Despite enjoying over 53% possession in the entire minutes, the home side failed to register a single shot on target—a damning statistic that highlighted their blunt attack.

The breakthrough arrived just before halftime. In the 44th minute, Kotoko earned a penalty after a Hearts defender clipped an onrushing attacker in the box.

Guinean striker Morifin Donzo stepped up confidently, slotting the spot-kick low into the bottom corner past a diving Hearts goalkeeper. The goal sent the traveling Kotoko supporters into ecstasy and silenced the bulk of the Accra crowd.

Trailing 1-0, Hearts emerged with renewed urgency after the break. Dramani introduced attacking substitutions to inject pace and creativity, but Kotoko’s compact defensive shape absorbed the pressure.

The visitors dropped into a mid-block, frustrating Hearts’ attempts to penetrate centrally while remaining dangerous on the counter.

Hearts managed a handful of half-chances—a header wide from a corner and a long-range effort comfortably saved—but continued to lack the cutting edge required to breach Kotoko’s resolute backline. Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was rarely tested, underscoring the Phobians’ impotence in front of goal.

For Kotoko, the three points were secured through grit and organization rather than flair. Donzo’s penalty proved the difference, but the team’s collective pressing and transitional threat kept Hearts on the back foot throughout.

The defeat marks Hearts of Oak’s first loss of the 2025/26 campaign, halting their eight-game unbeaten streak and dropping them in the standings. For Asante Kotoko, the victory propels them to 7th place, with three matches still in hand—a position that keeps their title aspirations firmly alive.

This loss landed just two days shy of Hearts of Oak’s 114th anniversary on November 11, 1911 – a club born in the shadow of Osu Castle, symbolizing resilience through thick and thin.

Phobian faithful, those rainbow-clad legions who’ve weathered relegations, financial storms, and continental heartbreaks, poured into the stadium with dreams of a statement win to toast the milestone.

Instead, they trudged out into the humid Accra evening carrying the weight of a loss that feels heavier with Christmas looming – the season of jollof debates and family rivalries, where a Super Clash stumble can sour the festive cheers.

Hearts fans decried a late equalizer from Mawuli Wayo ruled out for offside (a tight call, but the linesman held firm), with some alleging “bad officiating” that had police escorting the ref off the pitch amid jeers.

This derby result reignites the historic rivalry, setting the stage for an intriguing second leg later in the season. Kotoko fans will savor the Accra triumph, while Hearts regroup to address their finishing woes ahead of upcoming fixtures.
