KNUST Murder Suspect Remanded as Investigation Deepens

 

Daniel Tuffour, a 21-year-old suspect arrested in connection with the tragic death of a final-year student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has been remanded into police custody for two weeks. This decision was made after he was arraigned before the Kumasi District Court 2 on Friday morning.

The victim, identified as 23-year-old Joana Deladem Yabani, a final-year Biological Sciences student, was discovered unresponsive near the university’s Disability and Rehabilitation Centre in the early hours of Thursday, February 27, 2025. KNUST Security Services responded swiftly to the scene and transported her to the University Health Services, where she was pronounced dead.

Breakthrough in Investigations

Tuffour’s arrest followed a review of CCTV footage that placed him at the scene where the body was discovered. At the time of his arrest, he was reportedly wearing the same attire captured in the footage. Further investigations have also linked him to a possible relationship with the deceased, raising questions about his involvement in the circumstances surrounding her death.

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, confirmed the suspect’s role in the ongoing investigation. “The suspect is currently assisting the police with inquiries, and we are committed to uncovering the truth,” he said.

University and Police Take Action

In response to the incident, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has intensified surveillance on the KNUST campus to enhance safety. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, personally reached out to the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, assuring her of the police’s dedication to maintaining security on campus.

The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the university community, expressed gratitude for the swift intervention and ongoing support from the Ghana Police Service.

University’s Official Statement

The management of KNUST has officially confirmed the identity of the deceased and expressed condolences to her family. A comprehensive investigation involving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), KNUST Internal Security, and University Health Services has been launched to uncover the circumstances surrounding her death.

The university has urged students and the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. Management also emphasized the need to respect the privacy of the bereaved family during this difficult time.

Reassurance to the University Community

To allay fears, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe announced the implementation of a 24-hour surveillance operation on campus to ensure the safety of students and staff. This proactive measure reflects the university and police’s commitment to fostering a secure environment.
