KMA orders foreign retailers to leave markets by Tuesday

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has instructed all foreign nationals involved in retail trading within the metropolis to voluntarily vacate market spaces by Tuesday, December 9, 2025. This directive aims to restore order, enforce Ghana’s trade laws, and maintain calm in local markets.

The order serves to prevent any forced removals during a planned joint operation that will involve security agencies, the KMA, and the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA). The decision came after a confidential meeting between KMA officials and GUTA leaders.

Mayor Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi acknowledged GUTA’s concerns over foreign traders and confirmed the Assembly’s commitment to resolving the matter through legal means. He also called on GUTA to halt its current practice of locking shops run by foreign nationals.

A multi-agency committee, including representatives from the Ghana Immigration Service, Customs Division, Ghana Police Service, KMA, Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, and GUTA, has been formed to oversee and coordinate the directive’s enforcement lawfully.
