Kenyan Football Marred by Violence: 66 Fans Hospitalized
A league match between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia in Kenya’s top division turned violent on Sunday, leaving 66 supporters hospitalized.
The incident occurred at the Gusii Stadium, where rival fans clashed before kickoff, throwing stones and objects.
Two fans suffered skull fractures among other serious injuries. Despite Gor Mahia’s 1-0 win, courtesy of Sylvester Wanyama’s late goal, the on-field result was overshadowed by the off-field violence.
Gor Mahia condemned the incident, expressing regret and wishing those affected a speedy recovery.
Authorities have launched a full investigation, with calls for improved security and crowd control at football venues nationwide.
